Has tourism has been a culprit in commodifying cultures and traditions?

Commodification is a situation whereby tourist experiences are transformed into tangible commodities that are instantly recognizable and ubiquitous. I definitely think tourism is a huge culprit in commodifying cultures and traditions.

It seems that many cultural objects are no longer cultural assets but are morphing into consumer goods and culture and traditions are destroyed to meet the needs of tourism. For instance, in the Netherlands context, many cultural objects are commercially made for the sale to tourists for example their traditional clogs and costumes. There are even windmills statues, snow globes and fridge magnets. By doing so, they seem like they are selling their culture as a product and all these knick knacks are merely objects that do not posses any real culture but simply just an association to the country you visited. It is because of tourism that gave rise to all these commodified cultural objects as people would want to bring back a piece of something from the country they visited and a tool for marketing and advertising. What mortified me is that a traditional Dutch costume is being sold as a Halloween costume in certain countries. Isn't a traditional costume suppose to be worn on a special occasion significant to one's culture and tradition instead of being worn as a Halloween costume?

It seems to me that although tourism revives culture, it causes the problem of commodification as well as the problem of commercialization of culture as  tourist purchases are driven by a desire to possess a mark, rather than any genuine interest in local cultural traditions or beliefs.

Also, As tourism brings in revenue and plays an important factor to the economy of a country, the government needs to constantly bring in tourist to the country. They do this by commodifying its culture into its tourism campaigns, and this works well for them as it gives the audience. For Netherlands, in their Typically Dutch video, it depicts all the aspects of Dutch culture from their tulips, to their canals, to their museums, carving of clogs, their windmills and their art. The Netherlands is trying to sell Holland's culture to potential tourist by commodifying their culture.

It is because of tourism and demand for one's culture that has led to the commodification of cultures and traditions be it in cultural objects, performances, and tourist videos. All these are done with the intent to gain share in the market and earn revenue.
